The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, America's only full-time professional chamber orchestra and a leading innovator in the classical music industry, seeks a Director of Artistic Planning. The Director is the position principally responsible for engaging our musicians, Artistic Partners, management, and Board to coordinate and create the organization's short- and long-term artistic and educational programming. The SPCO's musicians play an active role in the development of the Orchestra's artistic work. Management and musicians agree that the Director needs to have the knowledge, energy and vision to bring ideas to the table, while also being a willing and active collaborator with others in the organization.
With a 50-year history of adventurous programming, the SPCO offers one of the most dynamic settings for music presentation in the world. The candidate we are looking for will be excited to join a distinctive organization that has ambitious plans for artistic growth. The SPCO has a balanced budget, no debt, and a growing and loyal audience. During our 40-week season we give more than 100 concerts, including performances by the entire ensemble of 35 musicians, as well as chamber music concerts, educational programs, and a contemporary music series.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organizational skills, knowledge of and good working relationships with artists, composers, managers, presenters, and ensembles and a deep knowledge of the classical music repetoire particularly as applicable to the SPCO. A working knowledge of contemporary music and current composers is needed. Also required is the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and a track record of distinctive programming for a growing audience, along with knowledge of the programming history and artistic profile of leading organizations in the peforming arts internationally. A Bachelors degree in Music or Music History is required along with prior managing experience in an orchestra, festival or other performing arts organization. A Master's degree preferred.
This position requires prolonged sitting with occasional standing and lifting of up to five pounds. Manual dexterity to operate computers, copiers and other office equipment required.
